Nestled at around 4 kms from Leh town on the Leh - Kargil Road, the Hall of Fame is a museum which was constructed in memory of the brave soldiers who lost their lives fighting for the motherland India at the India-Pakistan war.
As you pass through the OP Vijay Gallery, the museum showcases arms and amenities of Pakistani Army which were seized, along with pictures and biographies of brave soldiers who fought in that war. A section of the museum also exhibit Siachen area, exhibiting apparel and amenities used by the Indian Army in the region. The letters written by soldiers to their families, photographs clicked during wars fought in the region and a 30 minutes documentary on the Kargil War, are some of the highlights. Apart from this, one can also witness items related to Local Ladakhi culture, their history, vegetation and wildlife found across the globe.

The Leh Palace is a 17th-century former royal palace also known as 'Lhachen Palkhar,' and one of the central attractions in Leh. Constructed under assistance and support of by King Sengge Namgyal, it used to house his family. The 9-storey dun-coloured palace is now converted into a museum and a prayer room, while the highlight is the sweeping view of Leh and the surrounding Zanskar mountain from the rooftop.
The Leh Palace is designed and inspired by the Potala Palace in Lhasa (Tibet), and a considerable part is now in ruins due to the Kashmiri invasion that took place in the 19th century. The beauty of the Leh Palace still stands in pride with a several ancient Buddha relics, old utensils, paintings, cutlery used by the royal family and artefacts embellishing the walls, most of which are around 450 years old.
The palace looks even more mesmerizing when it is lighted upon certain special occasions, such as Galdam Namchot festival when locals gather around the palace to celebrate and enjoy the local festival. The majestic palace is presently under the Archaeological Survey of India, which is working on renovating the ancient structures of that era and trying to keep intact the history of the Namgyal dynasty in Leh.

Hemis is nestled around 45 kms to the south of Leh on the western banks of the Indus River. The Hemis Monastery was built in 1630 and which is the biggest and very richly bestowed monastery of Ladakh. Magnificent and facinating, Hemis is different from the other important monasteries of Ladakh. The monastery is very well decorated on all 4 sides by colorful prayer flags which flutter in the breeze and send prayers to Lord Buddha.
The main building has white walls. The stones of the walls are very well embellish and painted with religious figures. On the northern side are 2 assembly halls, and as in most of the monasteries one can also see the guardian deities and the Wheel of Life here. The Hemis Monastery also has an main library of Tibetan books and a very impressive and valuable collection of Thangkas, gold statues and Stupas embedded with precious stones.
One of the largest Thangkas is displayed every twelve years during the Hemis Festival, held for 2 days in June - July. The annual festival, commemorating the birth anniversary of Guru Padmasambhava brings alive the courtyard of the monastery. The festival, where good triumphs over evil in a colorful pageant, also holds the annual 'bazaar' where local Ladakhis from remote areas buy and sell wares. During the festival, various rituals and mask dances are performed in this courtyard. Hemis is about 40 km from Leh and can be visited comfortably in one day if one is traveling by car or jeep.

The Shey Monastery or Gompa and the Shey Palace complex are structures located on a hillock in Shey, 15 kilometres to the south of Leh in Ladakh, northern India on the Leh-Manali road. Shey was the summer capital of Ladakh in the past. It contains a huge shahyamuni buddha statue.

Alchi Choskor Monastery is one among the oldest Buddhist monasteries of the northern park of India, but features a stark contrast to the opposite Buddhist shrines within the country, in terms of architecture also as prayers. It is considered to be a Buddhist temple by many, rather being a full fledged monastery. Mural paintings and carvings are unique to any other in the vicinity. Alchi Choksor Monastery is nestled by the rivers Indus and Zanksar and is about 70 kms away from Leh, along the Leh – Srinagar highway. Many consider the monastery complex together of the oldest within the region, probably dating back to quite 1000 years, but now there are not any monks living here and studying. It is very popular and more of a visiting place by sacred Buddhist scholars as well as visitors. One of the unique feature of this monastery is that it is built on the flat ground, with backdrops of high-rise mountains of the Himalayan ranges, which is not common with other monasteries in the Leh region. From the surface , the monastery won't appear to be existent in such glorious ways, as dilapidated buildings and houses surround the complex and sometimes it'd also appear as non-existent. It has always been found to be very realistic, yet thought inspiring as to the primary reason for the building of such a monastic complex.
History :
It has not yet been clearly confirmed on the historical dates for the construction of the monastery complex, as there are variety of buildings included within the complex. Most common belief is that the famous translator Rinchen Zangpo arrived here in 10th century and created a couple of monasteries. With his efforts, many other monasteries came up within the Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim and neighbouring areas and about 108 monasteries are credited to him. These monasteries are said to belong to the Vajrayana sect of Tibetan Buddhism. Under his influence, many artistic contributions were done by the Kashmiri artists. In the later years way back to the 15th century, worship and studies within the Alchi Choksor Monastery ceased and it went into administrative control of other neighbouring monasteries, when Likir Monastery has been taking care of its maintenance since those days.

Thiksey Monastery is a tibetan-style monastery nestled 20 kms south of Leh on Leh-Manali highway, constructed in 1430 AD belongs to the Gelukpa Order of Buddhism. The 12 Storey monastery is situated on top of a hill, giving stunning views of the town as well as the Indus valley below. The main attraction of Thiksey is the Maitreya Temple which houses a 15-metre high Maitreya Buddha statue. It is the largest such statue in Ladakh and it covers 2 stories of the building. Thiksey Gompa hosts the Gustor ritual, organized from the 17th - 19th of September month.
Thiksey consists of various white buildings that are arranged in hierarchical order, which stand out against the rocky golden brown hills. It reflects the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet. Thiksey consists of 10 temples and is currently home to more than 100 monks. The monastery houses Buddhist stupas, swords, thangkas, wall paintings and statues. Other main attractions at Thiksey are Tara Temple, Assemnly Hall, Lamokhang Temple, Nunnery, Library and the rooftop.

The Likir Monastery or Likir Gompa is the oldest monastery in Ladakh region, nestled around 52 kms from Leh town in the scenic Likir village. Belonging to the Gelugpa sect of Tibetan Buddhism, the main attraction here is a 75 feet large seated statue of Maitreya Buddha which is gilded in gold. There are other several paintings of guardian holiness, murals and thangkas that embellish the walls of assembly halls.
The Gompa is the seat of Ngari Rinpoche, who is the youngest brother of Dalai Lama. ‘Likir’ means ‘The Naga-Encircled’ which represents the bodies of two great serpent spirits- Nanda and Taksako. According to legends, these serpents had guarded the monastery.
At present, there's a school inside the Likir Monastery run by the Central Institute of Buddhist studies along with a library open to tourist where old manuscripts, volumes and books on Buddhism and the teachings of Tsong Khapa are housed. A temple named Gonkhang is also present in the complex having images of Tsongkhapa and Sakyamuni. The Likir Monastery festival is the most attractive event held annually which includes Cham dance performed by lamas and an exhibition of monastery collection.

The main and unique attraction of Diskit Monastery is a gigantic statue of Lord Buddha on the top of it. This popular monastery is located in the Nubra Valley Of ladakh. This famous tourist attraction is considered as one of the oldest as well as the largest Buddhist center in Ladakh. The Diskit monastery was constructed during the 14th century by Changzem Tserab Zangpo. The huge 100 foot Maitra Buddha statue was inaugurated by the well-known holy priest Dalai Lama is the key attraction among a number of tourists across the globe. The main part of the monastery is a prayer hall that features several images of fierce guardian deities and a huge drum.
